We are SO excited to have Sandy and Sosina with us this summer, both of whom are recent graduates from Lanier Early College High School. They have participated in our Green Teens program previously, and have decided to spend their summer with us before starting college in the fall! Both applied and interviewed for these internship positions because they wanted the opportunity to explore Austin while developing leadership, teamwork, writing, and ecological literacy skills, in addition to teaching youth about environmental stewardship.
Sandy
Sandy is an extremely busy graduate from Lanier Early College High School (class of 2019). Sandy joined Lanier’s Green Teens during her sophomore year. As a member of the tennis team, she’d see other Green Teen students working in Lanier’s Monarch Gardens from the tennis courts. It was then she decided she wanted to help. Since then Sandy has become one of the Lanier Green Teens most active members, participating in 53+ major Green Teen activities and service projects. She is extremely committed to helping the environment both in and outside of Lanier. She served as the Lanier Green Teens Co-President for 1 semester, has been an active member/student leader of Lanier’s Eco Team, and was involved with Austin Youth River Watch for 2 years where she completed 276 hours of service as a volunteer, mentor, and an ambassador. Last summer she also participated in the Austin Environmental Heroes Program.
Sandy’s favorite memory from Green Teens was helping care for the Monarch Gardens as well as helping catch and tag monarch butterflies for citizen science. Sandy will be attending UT Austin in the Fall where she will be the first in her family to attend college. She is planning on majoring in Political Communications to prepare her for law school.
Sosina
Sosina recently graduated from Lanier Early College High School (class of 2019), which she accomplished in just 3 years. Sosina officially joined Lanier’s Green Teens this past academic year but began helping the Lanier Green Teens before that. She was a volunteer at Lanier’s Community Clean Up for last year’s Keep Austin Beautiful Day, had helped to care for Lanier’s Monarch Gardens, and participated in Lanier’s version of the Texas Pollinator Bioblitz by helping to catch and tag monarchs for citizen science. In her 1.5 years with Green Teens she has participated in 20+ major Green Teen activities and projects.
Sosina enjoys swimming, reading, learning about plants and computer science. She was a member of Lanier’s National Honor Society and she plans on attending ACC where she will major in Biology as a Pre-Med student.
