Environmental Educator

About Us: Keep Austin Beautiful is a nonprofit organization committed to inspiring and educating Austinites to beautify green spaces, clean waterways, and reduce waste every day. We work with schools to teach youth about recycling, composting, water quality, and other environmental topics. Our goal is to promote environmental stewardship through engaging, inquiry-based learning and student engagement.

 

Position Overview: The Environmental Educator plays a key role in delivering in-school educational programming, focusing on fostering a positive learning atmosphere that promotes respect for sustainability and the natural environment. We are seeking a passionate individual with experience in education and environmental topics to join our team. This position offers an exciting opportunity to make a meaningful impact on students across Austin.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate Keep Austin Beautiful’s in-school education programs for elementary, middle, and high school students.
  • Lead in-person presentations and virtual activities as needed for the Generation Zero (Zero-Waste) and Clean Creek Campus (water quality-focused) programs.
  • Support in-person field trips for the Clean Creek Campus program.
  • Serve as a liaison between schools and Keep Austin Beautiful.
  • Track and report program participation and other relevant data.
  • Create and maintain a positive and enthusiastic learning environment.
  • Engage both students and teachers actively in the learning process.
  • Assist with additional educational projects and participate in team meetings.

 

Qualifications:

 

Required:

  • Experience teaching and/or working with K-12 youth.
  • Reliable transportation and a clean driving record.
  • Successful completion of a background check.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Physical ability to lift thirty pounds and work outdoors in various weather conditions.

 

Preferred:

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Knowledge of environmental topics such as solid waste, water quality, gardening, or outdoor education.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in Spanish with children and adults.
  • Experience teaching middle and high school students.
  • A degree in education, environmental studies, conservation, ecology, sustainability, or general science.

 

Work Hours: This is a part-time position with up to 25 hours per week. The work schedule is Monday through Friday, within the hours of 8 AM – 4 PM, with occasional evenings and weekends.

 

Benefits: As this is a part-time position, health, dental, and retirement benefits are not included. However, Keep Austin Beautiful provides a supportive and dynamic work environment. The role offers pro-rated vacation and sick leave, along with mileage and cell phone reimbursement.
