Congratulations to Blanton Elementary School for winning the Bleed Orange, Live Green Zero Waste Champion Award! Every year, Keep Austin Beautiful recognizes one of our Generation Zero program schools for their outstanding efforts to reduce waste. The award is made possible through a partnership among Austin Resource Recovery, Keep Austin Beautiful and Longhorn IMG Sports Marketing as part of the University of Texas Bleed Orange, Live Green initiative.
Blanton Elementary School was selected based on participation in the Generation Zero Waste education program during the 2018-2019 school year, the comprehensiveness of its zero waste initiatives including, but not limited to, composting, recycling, and reuse initiatives, and on overall student, teacher, and community participation.
All students in first and third grade learned through Generation Zero Waste about recycling, composting, and conservation while giving students simple solutions for reducing their waste. The students then took their knowledge about composting and recycling and put it into practice on their campus, as Blanton Elementary school implemented a new campus wide composting system in their school. The students were very enthusiastic about having the ability to compost and recycle their breakfast in the classroom, to play their part in a Blanton Elementary School’s Zero Waste initiative.
Keep Austin Beautiful and Austin Resource Recovery are proud to congratulate the Blanton Bobcats and recognize them for their dedication to helping the City of Austin get one step closer to its zero waste goal.
