Every month we will highlight a new lake leader from our Clean Lady Bird Lake program. Lake leaders are the heart and soul of the program. They commit to leading volunteers at their sites around Lady Bird Lake 6 times a year and help to remove 2,000 pounds of trash of recyclables from in and around the lake each year.
Festival Beach Boat Ramp Lake Leader – Steven A.
What do you love most about your site? This is where I regularly put my boat in the water so I feel a special connection with this area.
What is one of your favorite memories on Lady Bird Lake? Lady Bird Lake keeps me grounded and sane, helps me with direction both physically and mentally, and is a constant that all Austinites can rely on. From lake-shore festivals to fireworks, from triathlons and regatta’s to paddle boarders and kayak fishermen, there’s something for everyone in and around Lady Bird Lake.
What is your favorite on the water activity? While on the water I enjoy fishing and scooting around in my boat, checking out the bats, listening to a baseball game, and watching urban nature unfold before me.
What motivates you to keep the lakes ecosystem healthy? The wildlife and natural beauty that make up Lady Bird Lake motivate me to do my part to keep the Lake clean and healthy for future generations. Seeing old photo’s before the “Trail” project and seeing the Lake today emphasizes how much of a positive impact we can have on our urban landscape.
What is one thing volunteers can look forward to when participating in the cleanup? Volunteers in the cleanup can expect to feel the joy and inspiration in helping take care of one of Austin’s iconic public spaces, and the feeling of a deeper connection with the visitors and wildlife that frequent these areas. Not to mention the like-minded people you will meet during the cleanup, whether they are participating or just giving you a shout out as they pass on by!
