the Austin community toward greater environmental stewardship

MISSION
Keep Austin Beautiful provides resources and education to inspire individuals and the Greater Austin communities toward greater environmental stewardship.

HISTORY
Keep Austin Beautiful, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit service organization governed by a volunteer board of directors, was established by the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce in 1985 to preserve Austin’s quality of life.

VISION
Our vision is for every community to be vibrant, engaged, and environmentally responsible through:
  • Cleanup and Litter Prevention
  • Beautification and Restoration
  • Waste Reduction and Resource Conservation
  • Education and Outreach Services
AREAS OF FOCUS

Clean - removing litter from neighborhoods, creeks, and public spaces in collaboration with the community while raising awareness about the impact of litter.

In 2012, more than 18,000 volunteers contributed more than 35,400 hours (4 years of time!) of service and removed 76.7 tons of trash and debris (picture 76 elephants) from Austin’s public spaces. Volunteers are making lasting commitments too – 136 groups adopted 74 miles of streets and creeks to keep them litter-free.

Beautify - building vibrant sustainable communities by empowering neighbors to beautify and restore public spaces.

Last year KAB loaned tools, distributed native seeds, and awarded $10,000 in beautification grants to support 163 projects that engaged 8,668 volunteers who contributed 28,333 hours of service worth more than $620,000.

Recycle - cultivating waste reduction practices within the citizenry in order to divert waste from landfills and transition to a zero waste culture.

10,972 pounds of recycling are collected at nearly 60 events annually.

Educate - leading presentations, service-learning projects, and awareness campaigns to nurture environmental consciousness.

During the 2011-2012 school year KAB partnered with 32 schools and led 542 presentations, activities, and service projects educating 2,722 students. An additional 7,382 youth were reached through our Patch Pals Activity Kit lessons.

Recognize - honoring the most outstanding environmental efforts of individuals, schools, and organizations.

Each year KAB celebrates the KAB Award Winners in eight categories at the Annual Awards Luncheon and awards six schools $500 through the Longhorn Recycle Roundup Good Sports Always Recycle program.
