State Rep. Dawnna Dukes, Keep Austin Beautiful, and United Way held the 17th Annual MLK Day of Service to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Each year, this service project brings together hundreds of volunteers who dedicate time to beautifying the Austin street bearing King’s name.
“MLK Day of Service is a holiday that gives people the opportunity to celebrate the legacy of Dr. King and pay tribute to his vision of strengthening the community,” said Dukes. “It’s amazing to see so many empowered volunteers transform Dr. King’s beliefs and teachings into community service.”
“This day would not be possible without the collaboration from Rep. Dukes, Keep Austin Beautiful, local agencies, non-profits and volunteers,” said UWATX Board Member Rodney Northern. “It inspires community members to get involved in service activities, which resonate with our vision of creating a thriving community for all.”
More than 300 volunteers gathered at United Way for Greater Austin for breakfast, registration, supplies distribution and an official kickoff. After the kick-off, volunteers dispersed along MLK Blvd. to pick up trash and beautify a 4-mile stretch of the major street.
